Tiahunanaco was a pre-incan civilization located just off the shores of Lake Titicaca in what is now Bolivia, that was discovered only decades ago and is still being excavated.
It is an awesome place to visit, due to its remote location, excellent artiifacts, and the sheer fact that researchers have only begun to uncover and understand this sun and moon worshipping civilization. It is literally walking into a live archaeological dig.
What really made the visit special for me, other than the amazing weather and views, was that few other tourists (comparatively) get around to visiting. It is kind of like your own, private, undiscovered ancient civilization, which is always cool to have handy.
The monoliths at the site were impeccable, and the sun gate, as pictured above, was pretty breathtaking.
Standing at the farthest set of excavated ruins, were alpacas were literally running wild around us, we noticed a large, unnatural looking mound of grass dead ahead. Clearly, there is more buried civilization to find out there...
